10 Things You Should Avoid Doing in Your Life
If you refrain from doing these things, you’ll live a better life

It can have its challenges and opportunities.Sometimes life throws us curve balls we were not expecting. During these tough times, you mustn’t do something you may regret later in life.

“Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson, an American essayist

What exactly should you try to avoid? The answers are more straightforward than you realize.

There are 10 things you should avoid doing in your life. Let’s dive in.

1. Assume Your 9–5 Job Will Last for a Long Time and Be Your Only Income

No matter where you live in the world, the state of the economy, or how the job market looks, life can throw you the unexpected. That’s why you must be ready for whatever comes your way. The job you are working at now is not guaranteed to be there one month or one year from now.

You can’t place all your money in one basket. You must diversify with side hustles and prepare in advance for hard times. You never know when you are going to get the pink slip.

Whether you are 90 days into your new job or have been there for years, you must save enough money to live off it for three months. Also, you have multiple streams of income with side hustles. Relying on one job and one source of income is trouble.

2. Forget to Live by Your Values and Morals

It would help if you didn’t forget how you were raised, your values, and your beliefs. You probably even created some personal rules along the way. Your values and moral compass will help you make tough decisions and guide you through life.

Make sure that your values align with where you spend your time, and that you are true to what you say. Make sure you stand true to who you are in what you say and do. Make sure your actions back up your words.

3. Don’t Set Goals

Don’t be someone who doesn’t set goals and doesn’t want to be someone. Don’t drift through life like a feather in the wind. Set goals, so you know what you want to be and treasure every moment of your life.

Goals help you stay focused and give your life meaning. Look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself who you want to become and what type of lifestyle you want. Write down your top three goals and create a flexible plan to achieve them.

4. Depend on Other People Too Much

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.” — Steve Jobs, an American entrepreneur and co-founded Apple Computer.

Are you looking to others for constant love? Do you need attention from other people? Do you find that you need others to entertain you?

Focus on what you have going on in your life, not how others can help you

Please don’t rely on others too much because you are out of luck when they don’t have time for you. Build your confidence to take care of yourself and live a happy life.

Don’t look to others to help you. Believe in yourself, find fun by being alone, and develop skills that add value to other people’s lives.

5. Tell Yourself You Can’t Do Something

“Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears.” — Les Brown, an American politician and motivational speaker

It’s easy to say you can’t do something. If something looks hard to do, it’s simple to say you don’t have the skills to do it. Don’t let your fears hold you back.

A subtle change in your attitude can greatly impact your life in more ways than you may realize

Instead of saying, “I can’t” to something, say, “I can” do this. Ask yourself, “why not?” You can do anything when you leave space in your life for possibilities. Don’t let your fear of not being to do something take away from the fact that if you set your mind to do something, you can do it.

6. Dwell on Your Missteps

“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” — Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa

We all make mistakes. The key is to learn from them, not dwell on them.

Learn to fail, not fail to learn

Making missteps is part of life, and how you approach your mistakes is the key to living a resilient and successful life. Forgive yourself for your past mistakes. Reflect, learn, and move on.

We all underperform in some way in our lives. The key is to change how you view mistakes. View them as opportunities to grow, not ways to keep you from being successful and happy.

7. Spend What You Don’t Have

Living in the moment and spending money you don’t have can be easy. If you don’t have it, don’t spend it. It’s as simple as that.

Keep track of your monthly income and expenses. Create a budget. Don’t get caught up with keeping up with the Joneses.

Set aside a certain percentage of your paycheck for savings or investing. Be smart by taking away a little each month; over time, that small amount will turn into a large amount.

8. Take Yourself Too Seriously

Do you have a great sense of humor? Is it dry or dark? Are you good at making yourself laugh?

It would help if you did not take yourself too seriously to get through hard times. It would help if you laughed at yourself and with others because life can get hard some days.

9. Forget Who Helped You During Difficult Time

Life gets tough, and you’ll most likely have friends and family to assist you when you need it. Don’t forget who helped you when you needed it most or were down and out.

Always remember the simple gestures or kind acts that others do. Don’t forget to remember the person who took time out of their day to help you. Be grateful and reciprocate that help to others.

10. Blame Others for Your Problems

“People who blame things rarely change things. Blame is an unassailable change-avoidance strategy.” — Andy Stanley, an American pastor and author

It would be best if you accepted responsibility for your thoughts, actions, and words. Don’t blame others for your problems.

You have control over how you feel, act, and talk. You are responsible for the consequences of your behavior. You don’t have to do anything others say to do because the power to change your life or fix your issues starts and ends with you.

Bringing It All Together

There are 10 things you should avoid doing in life. If you refrain from doing these things in your life, you’ll live a better life.

Assume your 9–5 job will last for a long time and be your only income, forget to live by your values and morals, not set goals, depend on other people too much, and tell yourself you can’t do something. Furthermore, don’t dwell on your missteps, spend what you don’t have, take yourself too seriously, forget who helped you during difficult times, and blame others for your problems.
